BEDFORD
MUSIC CLUB
bringing
chamber music to the community

Bedford
Music Club promotes an annual cycle of
chamber music concerts, (mostly) on Thursdays, and has been for many
years the only organisation in
Bedford
to do so on a regular basis. Bedford Music Club is a registered charity
(No. 262943) and a member of the National Federation of Music Societies.
Why Thursday?
Bedford
has always been a singularly rich centre of music
making and the traffic density of concerts, rehearsals and musical
events in general is considerable. Concerts given by the Bedfordshire
Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia, the Bedford Choral Society, a whole
regiment of Youth Orchestras of astonishing quality and, in recent
years, the Philharmonia Orchestra all clamour for attention – a
situation to be relished rather
Why Chamber Music?
The name is often
enough to put many people off, which is a pity since it only means music
which is, quite literally, suitable for playing within a chamber, or
room. This obviously excludes the performance of anything which requires
musical forces on a scale approaching that of a full symphony orchestra.
However, that leaves open a very wide range of musical activity indeed.
Piano recitals, string quartets, woodwind and brass ensembles, baroque
groups, choirs and solo singers have all been part of our standard fare
but in addition we have always tried to include a seasoning of the rare
and unexpected. How about, for example, a performance of some fifty
(yes, 50!) different kinds of flute, or an evening recital on an
ophicleide – an historic instrument unearthed from the vaults of the
Royal Opera House? Whatever we do the result is never dull.
Why Club?
Don’t be put off
by the fact that our regular audience constitutes a “Club”.
Membership is entirely straightforward: one becomes automatically a
member just by buying a season ticket for the complete annual cycle of
six concerts, which incidentally represents a considerable saving in
cost compared with buying tickets for individual concerts. A season
ticket for 2005/2006 cost just £47 (concessions £42),
but there has always been a very special reduced rate for children of
members: they can become members and attend concerts for the purely
nominal fee of £1 for the
whole annual season. These junior ticket holders represent the audience
of the future and it is hoped that every advantage will be taken of this
offer.
