73x50 £650 I am a late developer. For years my work was tentative in colour and subject matter. Now, in my mid-fifties, I feel I am doing my best work. It grows urgent.
My painting can be narrative, erotic, comic, fantastic, polemical or simply depictions of everyday life. In nearly all, people are of central importance. The primary objective is always to make a picture that is beautiful and well crafted. At the back of everything must be the quality of the drawing.

The
Ladies of Misrule 150x99cm £1000 Why do I paint? Because when I’m painting I feel that my life is complete, that it has purpose. When I’m not working, I’m thinking about working. A picture is a task that you can get done. It poses solvable problems.
I want to make something that did not exist before, that you can look at again and again, that evokes the feeling of a moment. The best pictures have elements that struggle with each other but the viewer sees only the resolution and the balance.
Everyone brings their own experiences to the pictures, but I hope something of the feeling I had as I painted them will be shared.
